How do you even begin to sum up 2020? As it says on the opening page of SJF’s annual report, we are “grateful, encouraged and buoyed by the outpouring of love, support and trust we received in 2020.” It was a year of huge undertakings: our biggest year of grantmaking on the books with an incredible demonstration of community trust in SJF when so many of you gave in support of justice, allowing us to move resources to grantees in the first year of the pandemic and in response to the 2020 Uprisings. It was also a year of transition and challenge: we laid beloved members of our community to rest, struggled through undoing SJF’s institutional oppression internally, and felt the big impacts of shifting our relationships online. Joy and sorrow go hand in hand in the continual process of liberation. Thank you for sticking with us through it all.

With that, we are excited to launch our 2020 Annual Report. You might notice it’s a bit longer than in years previous — this year, we expanded the member profile and grantee spotlights so community stories had the space they deserved. We also commissioned artist Raychelle Duazo to create an incredible art piece for the back cover, depicting images from grantees Black Liberation Collective, Idaho and Western Native Voice. Inside you’ll find team highlights, details on our response to COVID-19 and the 2020 Uprisings, a full list of our 2020 grantees, a detailed breakdown of our grantmaking, Giving Projects, and financials, and more.
