KOCA/La Radio Montañeza: Voz de la Gente (Laramie, WY) $9,600 – KOCA is a bilingual community radio station serving a culturally diverse community, giving voice to marginalized and underrepresented groups, and creating dialogue about the region’s environmental, economic, and social issues. This grant will fund “Laramie Colors: GLBTQ Social Justice Advocacy and Alliance,” a project to create conversations about GLBTQ justice that are accessible to all. This will include bilingual community theater productions based on the stories of GLBTQ people in the community; one on-air program by and for GLBTQ youth; one on-air program by and for GLBTQ Latinos, to include interviews, guest speakers, and resources.
PFLAG Portland Black Chapter (Portland, OR) $9,600 – PFLAG PBC, the first PFLAG chapter in the nation by and for people of color, promotes the health and well-being of specifically Black LGBTQ persons and their families and friends through support, education, organizing and advocacy. Their ongoing organizing includes working with African American youth to create Gay/Straight Alliances in high schools and working with churches in the African American community to facilitate dialogue around homosexuality, homophobia, and religion. As the first of its kind, PFLAG PBC is already developing a model for other chapters to replicate and adapt. This grant will provide general operating support.
Pinay sa Seattle – GABRIELA USA (Seattle, WA) $3,900 – Pinay sa Seattle is a collective of Filipina women, working to build a community in the Seattle area invested in educating, defending and advocating for the human rights of Filipinas all over the world. This grant will support a new education initiative that centers the experiences and achievements of LGBTIQ Filipinos, encouraging the development of LGBTIQ organizers for social justice within the Filipino community. The curriculum will be shared with other organizations nationally and locally, within the GABRIELA network and beyond.
Stonewall Youth (Olympia, WA) $9,600 – Stonewall Youth is an organization of youth, activists, and allies that empowers lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, intersex and asexual youth to speak for themselves, educate their communities and support themselves. In addition to support groups, drop-in space, and resources for basic needs, they link social services with social justice through workshops and trainings, youth organizing summits, and fighting the criminalization of homelessness in Olympia. This grant will provide general operating support, including increased outreach in rural areas.
Umatilla Morrow Alternatives (Hermiston, OR) $9,600 – UMA advocates for equality, leadership, education, and human dignity among all underserved/minority populations. Their varied work includes direct services like STD testing and needle exchange, community organizing on issues like racial profiling and immigration, a leadership development program to train new organizers, and a resource for anyone in crisis. Founded and led by GLBT, HIV-positive, low-income, people of color, UMA keeps anti-oppression and inclusion at the center of all its work. This grant will provide general operating support.
