On June 24, 2022, the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, the landmark 1973 decision that legalized abortion in the United States. Reproductive justice organizers have been preparing for this event for over a decade. SJF absolutely condemns this horrifying attack on the humanity, bodily autonomy, and self determination of birthing people. There is so much more to say, but we see our role in this particular moment as calling on our community to mobilize its resources in support of the frontline organizers providing the most urgent services — abortion funds.

SJF’s region includes Idaho and Wyoming, two states where access to abortion was already extremely limited and is now actively in the process of being eliminated entirely; we also serve Montana, where abortion is still legal as of the publication of this blog post, but under threat. In our remaining two states, Washington and Oregon, abortion is still legal but we know that rural, low-income, undocumented, and other communities impacted by oppression still face significant barriers to receiving this life saving healthcare. It is imperative that donor organizers and funds act now and make ongoing commitments to resource vital organizing in support of people seeking and defending their right to an abortion.

We are so grateful for the powerful networks of reproductive justice organizers and advocacy organizations in our region and urge you to turn your attention and support to them at this time.

In the meantime, SJF will be working on a more comprehensive approach for our organization to take in support of communities most at risk in Idaho, Wyoming, Montana as well as Oregon and Washington. We wish you peace, safety, and rest in this dark time.

“While abortion is still legal in Oregon […] we still have disparities amongst rural, tribal and undocumented communities, and communities of color. This fund expands equity of access for Oregonians who need it most and supports people most impacted by gaps in access and bans on abortion.” – Seeding Justice
