Grantees

Founded in late 2010, by long-time organizer Dean Jackson, Hilltop Urban Gardens is a community-based urban agriculture, justice, and equity organization in Tacoma, WA. Hilltop Urban Gardens received their first grant from Social Justice Fund NW. HUG partners with the community to grow healthy food, young people and neighbors. They seek to inspire our community to live with abundance while understanding and interrupting the root causes of economic poverty & wealth accumulation and systems of oppression. HUG believes growing their own food independence is an important strategy in this process.

“Part of why I felt so proud of our grant from SJF is to know that people went through a process to understand racial and economic justice … Even though a dollar is a dollar, I know that this money came from a good place,” Jackson says.
